Introduction to the CommonWords Database
(Updated December, 2010) The CommonWords database helps teachers and students of
English words generate specialized word lists. This updated version contains
seven data tables:
- CommonWords, the main table, which has been expanded to 8591
high frequency words;
- Correspondences: Sound to Spelling, a list of the 356 sound
to spelling correspondences found in those 8500 words;
- Correspondences: Spelling to Sound, essentially the reverse
of the previous;
- Themes, a list of 169 themes, or topics, for which 4800 of
the words in the CommonWords table have been tagged;
- Letters Count, providing statistics on the 26 letters in
CommonWords;
- Sounds Count, statistics on the 68 sounds in CommonWords,
and
- Spellings Count, statistics on the 155 spellings.
In addition to those in the original, the updated CommonWords table contains
seven new fields: Correspondences: Spelling to Sound, Homophones, Homographs,
Other Problem Spellings, Syllable Structure, Complexity, and Sources.
